Logistics and operations

Logistics
is
the
key
service
at
Fjord
Base

Logistics covers many different things. It’s a broad field and one of the most important services we provide here at Fjord Base. It has been since the start in 1985, and it still is today. We deliver comprehensive logistics services—you could say we handle logistics from A to Z. Within Fjord Base Group’s logistics services, there are two departments: Dag Eikeland’s Logistics Center and Christian Olsen’s Operations.

The heart of transport

“The Logistics Center is the heart of transport at Fjord Base. We are the hub for assignments involving transport, and the loading and unloading of vehicles and vessels. Since we load and unload around 2,000 vessels a year, we have high standards for planning, efficiency, and HSE (health, safety, and environment),” explains Dag. With increased activity on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the recent period has been busy for Dag and his team at the Logistics Center.

“It’s full throttle on all fronts, and it looks like it will stay that way. We’ve got plenty to do—and that’s a good problem to have,” he says enthusiastically. Vessels to be loaded and unloaded are referred to as general logistics in Dag’s professional parlance. In addition to everything that general logistics entails, there are several other projects that take his time—pipe handling, supply operations, and maintenance turnarounds, among others.

Exploration drilling off Florø brings lots of activity at Building 75

On the first floor of the same building where Dag is based sits Christian Olsen. He—and the Operations Department—work with warehouse logistics, exploration drilling, and materials for a wide range of customers on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. At the warehouse in Building 75, 2024 has also been hectic.

“In addition to fully or partially operating our customers’ warehouses, there have been several exploration drilling campaigns off Florø. These are costly and demanding operations. Supporting an exploration drilling campaign requires experience and expertise. When operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf search for oil, they usually conduct a test well from a large rig, lasting anywhere from 30 to 100 days. During that period, they need everything—equipment, pipes, food—the whole lot. Whatever they need, we sort it out. It’s a delicate process with no room for delays,” Christian explains.

Like Dag’s department, this places high demands on the employees. It’s a good thing that within Fjord Base Group we have strong competence in HSE work. The statistics are good at the moment, with low sick leave and few injuries.

“We want employees to come to work healthy and go home even healthier,” Dag explains.

Part of Saga Fjordbase

This year, Norsk Contracting Partner (NCP) also became part of Christian’s area of responsibility. When Arne Stavøstrand retired earlier this year, a new structure was put in place for the company, which handles sandblasting, painting, and cleaning.

Innovation in practice

One of the things that makes us efficient and more sustainable is Saga Connect. The digital collaboration platform was built by our own IT and digitalization department and gives us logistics planning and real-time collaboration with our customers. “We’re ahead of the curve here. This is the development of a system no one has built before. Saga Connect gives us an indispensable overview,” says Dag. The solution has delivered a 26 percent reduction in time at berth and has already produced a significant, measurable reduction in emissions.
