Ole Schanke Eikum, konsernsjef i Fjord Base Gruppen.
These days, we are celebrating a double anniversary here at Norway’s largest supply base. Established in December 1985, our property company, Fjord Base, can celebrate its 40th anniversary, while the operating company Saga Fjordbase marks its 25th. Around the New Year, we will celebrate these milestones together with our employees and the Florø community. Recently, Havland also marked its 25th anniversary, and we would like to extend our warm congratulations to our good neighbour on Gaddholmen.
Until quite recently, Per Nødset and Oddgeir Igland were active in the companies on a daily basis and have been part of this remarkable journey. These two entrepreneurs found each other, seized the opportunity together, and have worked side by side for decades—mostly through good times, but also through challenging periods. Sustaining success over 40 and 25 years has required sound strategic decisions and a strong willingness to continuously adapt and innovate. Our history also reflects strong relationships and important supporters along the way. Today, Fjord Base is a workplace for more than 650 people and a cornerstone business in the Florø community, with significant ripple effects throughout the region. There is therefore every reason to thank Oddgeir Igland and Per Nødset for their commitment and hard work, and to congratulate all employees in Fjord Base Group who are carrying these proud companies forward.
As we enter December, we have the best HSE statistics we have seen in a long time. A strong culture, experienced professionals, and systematic work over time provide the foundation for strong HSE results. In 2025, we have also made an extra effort in organisational and employee development, including programmes such as HMS-Fyrtårn, Industrifagskulen, and a leadership development programme. On the HSE side, we have also introduced VR technology (Virtual Reality). Using VR headsets, we can now train on HSE operational tasks under completely safe conditions. Applying new technology in this way is a clear example of putting our value “innovative” into practice.
Activity on the Norwegian continental shelf is changing. Major discoveries such as Statfjord, Gullfaks, and Troll are being replaced by significantly smaller finds developed through so-called subsea tie-ins. This does not mean the end of the oil and gas industry, but it does mean that the industry must once again demonstrate the ability to innovate and adapt in order to find sustainable solutions. As part of this, operators—led by Equinor—have changed maritime operations to improve vessel utilisation. Even though vessels now arrive in a more irregular pattern, our employees have done a fantastic job with unloading and loading, reducing time alongside the quay. Through strong teamwork, we will remain a reliable supplier to Equinor and the other operators on the Norwegian continental shelf. Over the past year, we have also put forward solutions and measures to Equinor that contribute to strong HSE performance, lower emissions, and cost efficiency.
Although the green transition is progressing more slowly than we had expected, an important milestone was finally reached with HyFuel’s investment decision to establish hydrogen production. Investments of several hundred million kroner are both rare and significant—especially here in Florø. Hydrogen is expected to become a green fuel for vessels, and this production will strengthen Florø’s maritime position. At the same time, hydrogen production will enable circular solutions by supplying surplus heat to Havland and contributing to a strong overall energy balance. Together with Azane Fuel Solution, we have applied for Enova support to establish a land-based ammonia terminal, which is also expected to become an important green fuel for vessels.
The framework conditions for Norwegian offshore wind are gradually falling into place. Fjord Base is well positioned to become a strong player in the assembly of offshore wind turbines, and we are working both with customers and on further development of the base to realise offshore wind opportunities. The municipality has done extensive and thorough work on the land-use plan, and we have contributed studies to provide the best possible knowledge base. The business community is looking forward to the plan finally being adopted, as it sets important parameters for, among other things, industrial activity here at Fjord Base. New industrial areas should, as far as possible, be developed in connection with existing ones in order to ensure efficient land use through co-location and densification, while still allowing for industrial growth and development.
In addition to land, power supply is crucial for industrial development. It is therefore both encouraging and important that Linja has been granted a licence for a new power supply to Fjord Base and Florø. Today’s power supply has limited capacity, and Fjord Base has contributed to Linja’s work to secure a new power supply that will benefit all of Florø. The new supply will be based on the Guleslettene wind farm and will feed a new substation at Fjord Base via overhead line and subsea cable.
Although 25 and 40 years have passed, the story does not stop here. As you can read in this issue of Fjord Base Nytt, a great deal of exciting work is underway, and we still have strong ambitions to develop new, future-oriented industry and business.
