Liebherr LHM 280 crane
Fjord Base Group invests in new electric harbour crane – Liebherr LHM 280 – delivery in April 2026. The new crane will replace the diesel-powered Gottwald crane and marks an important step in the electrification of the equipment fleet at Fjord Base.
The new crane is the “big brother” of our existing cable-electric Liebherr LHM 180 and comes with the same proven equipment – along with several technical improvements based on our experience with the current crane. With a lifting capacity of up to 84 tonnes and cable-electric operation during lifting, this is a flexible and future-oriented solution – well suited to the demanding needs of offshore logistics.
The goal is clear: Fjord Base aims to become a zero-emission base. This investment brings us a step closer to full electric operations at the terminal and enables us to offer our customers even greener and more sustainable operations.
At Fjord Base, we have nine quays with shore power. Quay C already has crane power, and a similar solution is being planned for Quay E. These two quays are where most of the loading and unloading activities take place – and where the new crane will make the biggest difference.
Today, our two largest cranes – LHM 180 and Gottwald – account for around 135,000 kg CO₂ equivalents per year. With the LHM 280 and increased use of electricity for both Liebherr cranes, we can significantly cut emissions:
“These are concrete and measurable climate benefits, and an important step towards greener logistics. Our goal is to achieve a CO₂ reduction of 12–14%,” says Odd Helge Hatlem, Business Developer at Fjord Base Group.
The new crane also raises the standard for HSE and the working environment. It will be delivered with a modern, ergonomic operator cabin, significantly lower noise levels, an improved camera system, and an integrated “man lift system” for safe and efficient personnel transfer to and from vessels.
The procurement is the result of close cooperation between Fjord Base Group and Liebherr. The solution is tailored to our needs and operational patterns, with a strong focus on service and technical support to ensure high uptime and predictable operations.
“We hope and believe that the new crane will be well received by our customers. It helps reduce emissions on their behalf while also enabling safer and more efficient operations. This investment makes us both greener and better. We increase lifting capacity, improve the working environment, and strengthen our offering to customers – in line with our ambition to become a future zero-emission base,” says Erlend Toftesund, CEO of Saga Fjord Base.
