Fjord Base Gruppen offers LNG bunkering for supply vessels at quay D through a specially adapted tank facility. LNG is a more environmentally friendly fuel alternative for maritime operations, but it also requires strict routines for safety, monitoring and emergency preparedness. The facility is therefore subject to the Major Accident Regulations and is operated in accordance with applicable requirements from authorities, customers and suppliers.

Fjord Base

Safe handling of LNG

LNG is liquefied natural gas stored at a very low temperature, around -150 °C. The gas is odourless and colourless, and is classified as a hazardous substance because it is extremely flammable and can cause serious frost injuries through direct contact. Fjord Base Gruppen has submitted a safety report to the supervisory authorities, documenting how the requirements of the Major Accident Regulations are met.

The facility has a storage capacity of approximately 500 m³ of LNG. The gas is received either by truck or from vessels, stored in the tank facility and transferred to vessels using LNG as fuel. There have been no accidents at the facility since it was commissioned in 2009.

Key points

  • The LNG facility is located at quay D and is used for bunkering supply vessels.
  • Fjord Base Gruppen is subject to the Major Accident Regulations because the facility stores more than 200 tonnes of LNG.
  • The facility is monitored 24/7, and alarms are automatically sent to technical personnel.
  • Weekly inspections and monthly tests of the alarm and warning systems are carried out.
  • The warning system is tested twice a year.
  • In the event of a serious incident, the area will be alerted by siren and light signals, and evacuation within a radius of 200 metres may be initiated.
  • Fjord Base Gruppen cooperates with the local fire service and industrial emergency response team on emergency preparedness and exercises.
  • The main emergency scenarios are major gas leaks, gas leaks followed by fire, and fire on an LNG vessel at quay D.
